He Loves Her
Lexie is awake when I go in her room. She smiles up at me, her blue eyes crinkling at the corners, and my heart melts just as it does every single time she smiles at me. I sit on the corner of her bed and smooth my hand across her silky blonde hair.
“Hi, sweet pea. Did you have a good nap?”
She nods, smiling at me and pulling the pink bunny she never sleeps without into the curve of her arm.
“There’s someone I’d like for you to meet, sweetie.”
She glances at the doorway and then back at me, and I see the curiosity in her eyes. “He’s waiting for us in the living room.”
She scoots up in the bed the best she can, and I help her put her legs over the side, then pull her chair closer and lift her into it. Lexie loves company. She loves people, and every time I realize this, I wonder if I’ve sheltered her from the world too much. I’ve worried about what people will say to her, how it will make her feel, shape her self-image.
I worry now that Thomas won’t think she’s as perfect as I think she is.
With my heart clenching inside me, I roll her chair down the short hallway. Thomas is standing in the middle of the room with his hands in his pockets, worry clearly etched in his face. I understand suddenly that he is afraid she might reject him when I’ve been worrying about him rejecting her.
I stop the chair just short of where he’s standing and lift her onto the couch. As I squat down beside her, I realize I have no idea what to tell her to call him. I look up at Thomas. He kneels down in front of her and holds out his hand. “Hi, Lexie. I’m Thomas. It’s really nice to meet you.”
She is slow to lift her hand to his, but she does so with deliberate effort. He takes it gently, and I can see him melt beneath her touch.
“She doesn’t talk,” I say in a soft voice. “But she understands everything you say to her.”
Thomas nods once, reaching for the bag behind him. He slides it to her, and then pulls the edges open. She leans toward it and peers inside. She starts to flap her hands in the way that she claps, a big smile breaking across her face. Thomas reaches inside and pulls out an enormous stuffed toy.
“I used to have a Bassett Hound when I was growing up. I thought you might like this one.”
He sets it down next to her, and Lexie rubs its soft ears. Her smile is all for Thomas.
“We could take him for a walk,” I say.
Lexie looks at me, her eyes lit up.
“Would you like to do that?” I ask Thomas.
“Sure,” he says.
I get Lexie’s chair, and start to lift her into it, when Thomas says, “All right if I do that?”
I step back, and he picks her up as if she weighs no more than a feather, setting her on the wheelchair seat.
